Responding to the increasing demand for both our unique day care service and our organic veg boxes, we have started to convert a small field from permanent pasture into vegetable production. Setting up another market garden properly from scratch like this is no small undertaking but it will provide a substantial project for all our farm troopers to immerse themselves in and learn many new skills. This summer they have already conducted soil analysis, cleared hedgerows, removed broken fencing and generally cleared the field of unwanted stones and weeds. On top of this the field has been worked over by a tractor 12 times towing 8 different machines – and that is just to sow mustard to kill the wire worm that is present in most permanent livestock pasture! There is much, much more to do over the next two years but the whole team are totally up for it.
